There are plenty of myths around but which ones do you believe? Below we have quashed many of the travel and vacation myths that you might believe to be true.

1. Have a delayed flight? No problem, just mention rule 240 and the airline will happily compensate you for your troubles.

The truth is that a government-issued rule 240 that applies to all airlines simply doesn’t exist.

2. You want a weekend break but obviously weekend breaks are more expensive and a distant dream.

A quick trip to Google will clear your mind of this myth. The weekend breaks are often the same rate as weekdays. In fact because the business world doesn’t really have a call for weekend rooms you may find that the weekend break is even cheaper!

3. I’m going to save myself a fist full of dollars by keeping my feet on terra firma. I’m going to go by train because it’s much cheaper than a flight.

Discount flights are often much cheaper than the equivalent train journey. The flight is much quicker and will often be half the price of a train journey. In parts of Europe you will not have the option of a train journey; an aircraft is the only option. By all means check the prices off against each other you may get lucky.

4. I would go on a cruise vacation but I don’t want to spend months afterwards looking like a whale.

Although eating is a big part of a cruise vacation there is plenty to do on board to burn off the calories and port stops will include lots of walking. Some days you will do the equivalent of a two hour gym session. A one week cruise isn’t going to push a normal sized person into the morbidly obese category.

5. I can always stay safe and drink water by the bottle. Bottled water won’t give me diarrhea.

You need to check your source basically. 25% of bottled water is just tap water, according to the natural defense council. If the source is listed on the label then you don’t really have a choice but to believe it and happily drink away. If you are buying your bottle of water in a hotel or restaurant you can ask the waiter if the water is filtered or spring, they may lie but at least you have done you best.

6. You can’t take lighters, nail clippers or scissors on a plane without serious repercussions.

Simply not true. You can carry most of these items onto a plane without as much as a caution, warning or machine gun in the face.

7. The re-circulated air on board a plane will make you ill and cause flu like illness.

Planes re-circulate air in the cabin because it is much cheaper than pumping in fresh air from outside. It won’t make you ill but it will dehydrate you, drink plenty of water and you will be fine!

Hopefully we have managed to clear up some rumors and put your mind at ease. Never believe everything you hear on the internet, it’s usually not true.
